| Seafloor Image Map of the Monterey Bay Region |
In order to characterize the seafloor geology of the Monterey Bay continental shelf, the U.S. Geological Survey has mapped the region from nearshore to the shelf break using sidescan-sonar. By defining the seafloor geology, we hope to derive a better understanding of the myriad of biological habitats within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Also, we hope to gain a better understanding of locations of sediment erosion and deposition, thereby leading to knowledge of how sediment moves through the Sanctuary. The modern sediment transport system that today moves sediment from the rivers, cliff-bases, and northern sources and delivers it along the coast and across the shelf to the canyon heads is not well understood. The digital seafloor image maps generated using the sidescan-sonar acoustic images will help answer these, and other, questions about the Monterey Bay region.
