| Central California Digital Elevation Model and Bathymetry Images |
A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a digital representation of the topography of an area. The spatial information contained in a DEM can be used to complement the spatial and spectral information in remotely sensed satellite images. A nice aspect of working with DEM data is that they 'strip' away both man-made features and the effect of vegetation and soil types (it shows the surface strictly from a topographic point of view). On this webpage, we demonstrate some of the digital image processing and interactive analysis that can be done on the DEM data using USGS MIPS image processing software, including enhancing and analyzing structural patterns and related topographic information.
