USGS MIPS Customize Documentation

This program allows a MIPS user to customize the execution of image processing programs.

Print File Options

Most MIPS programs produce a print file containing a variety of information including: user input, program results, program execution information, etc. Customizations allowed to the print file are listed below:

Print File Directory

The current working or a user specified directory. This allows the user to select a directory where print files will be generated. There are two places a print file can be generated. If the current working directory is not selected then a valid directory specification must be entered.

A major disadvantage in using the current working directory(in VMS) is the generation of many print files in the current working directory; unless the user regularly deletes their print files.

Print File Name

This allows the user to select the name of the print file. The "program.prt" option uses the name of the program being executed to generate the print file name. For example, ratio will generate a print file called "ratio.prt".

If the "program.prt" option is not selected, a valid file specification must be entered and all programs will output information to that file specification.

Append to Print File

This option allows the user to select how new information is put into the print file. If the append option is off then a new print file will be created every time. If it is on and the print file already exists any new information will be appended to the end of the print file.

Output to Screen

Some programs produce output which only goes to the print file(e.g., HISTDK and LIST). By selecting this option the program will automatically output the information to the terminal screen in addition to the print file.

Program Status Options

Most MIPS programs have the ability to give some indication about their completion status. There are two indicators of completion status: percent progress and estimated time of arrival. Note, either can be turned on or off.

Output Progress

By selecting this option MIPS programs will output the percent progress given a user selectable increment value.

Output ETA

By selecting this option MIPS programs will output the estimated time of arrival/completion if the program will take longer than a user selected time.

Work Directory Options

Some MIPS programs need to use temporary work files as part of their processing. These work files are usually optional input to the files GUI. This option allows the user to specify a default directory specification for work files if they are not entered as input to the files GUI.

Browser Options

These options allow the user to select a World Wide Web Browser in order to view/access the MIPS on-line documentation. As a default, Netscape is the current browser but Mosaic or any other browser of choice can be specified.

File Format Options

Below are file format options which MIPS will use when converting/generating navigation or vector files.

Navigation Format

This allows the user to select the format in which navigation  files will be generated by MIPS programs. The binary option allows programs to run faster because this file format is computer readable only. The ASCII option gives the user the ability to type, edit or print the navigation information.

Vector Format

This allows the user to select the format in which vector files will be generated by MIPS programs. The binary option allows programs to run faster because this file format is computer readable only. The ASCII option gives the user the ability to type, edit or print the vector information.

Miscellaneous Options

Below are additional options that can be selected by the user.

Collect History File

Most MIPS programs have the ability to append to a history  file for a dataset. This allows the user to see the series of programs/parameters that were used to generate the dataset. This option allows the user to turn on/off the collection of the history file.

Collect Statistics File

Most MIPS programs which generate images have the ability to collect statistics about the image as it is being generated and store these statistics in a file associated with that dataset. This option turns on/off the collection of the statistics file.

File Name Inheritance

The files GUI has the ability to have succeeding files inherit directory specifications from the preceeding input files. For example, if a program has two input files and the user enters a directory specification on the first file then the second input file would inherit the directory specification from the first input file if one was not specifically entered for the second input file.

Action Options

The action options allow the user to exit this program, save the changes made during this customization session.

Ok Button

The ok button saves the current settings into the file mips_resource.dat. After the save is completed, the program exists.

Apply Button

The apply button saves the current settings into the file mips_resource.dat. Unlike the ok button, the program does not exit.

Reset Button

The reset button resets the parameters to the values currently stored in the file "mips_resource.dat". Note that once an apply is entered the values in the file have been modified and can not be reset.

Cancel Button

Exits the program without making any changes to the file "mips_resource.dat".

Help Button

Gives help on CUSTOMIZE by spawning off the currently defined web browser with information about the capabilities of this program; which is this document.
