-----------------------------------How do we put the underwater puzzle together to make an image map?

1) Collect the Puzzle Pieces

The image on the left is one of the puzzle pieces of our underwater image map of Monterey Bay. It is a sonar strip collected by a fish towed by a ship. You can move the scroll bar up and down to see how long it is!

This sonar strip was shrunk down to fit better on your computer screen - originally the image was 10 times longer and wider! If we printed it out before we shrunk it, it would have been over 8 feet long!!! The strip shows an area of the ocean floor about five miles long.

2) Put the Puzzle Together!

The images below show where the strip fits in the big puzzle. This is no ordinary puzzle, though. To make the strip be in the correct location, it had to be stretched, twisted, and pushed into place with computer software. This would be sort of like making a jigsaw puzzle piece fit into the right place by cutting it with scissors and pounding it with a hammer until it fit -- just not as noisy!

3) Where Does Our Sonar Strip Belong in the Puzzle?

This image has numbers and arrows matching the numbers on the left side of the strip to show where different points ended up when the sonar puzzle is finished. The completed puzzle is called a mosaic. Scroll the strip up and down to find the numbers and match them to the numbers below.

4) Enjoy the Finished Puzzle/Mosaic!

This image has a red box to show you where the above image is located in our finished sonar mosaic. Click the image to visit this area on the Monterey Bay Underwater Mosaic!
